Chapter 10
ANSELM
After my illuminating conversation with the king and queen of the Black Mountains, I took to the sky once more. They were right, I had no choice but to fight for the woman who was the key to my future happiness.
When I landed on the rooftop of my parentsâ castle, a servant rushed out with a cloak, closely followed by my father. His face was ashen.
âWhatâs happened?â I asked, pulling the cloak on and running for the door.
Please, please, let Kayla and the baby be okay.
âItâs your mother,â Dad said, swallowing hard. âShe had an accident. Slipped on the stairs...â
âOh God no.â I pulled the door shut behind us then started hurrying towards their bedroom.
âShe isnât there.â Dad stopped in the middle of the hallway. âThe doctor. He said... Sheâs...â
He didnât seem to be able to speak, and panic skittled through me. How bad was it?
I grabbed my father by the arms and shook him. âDad. Concentrate. Where have they got Mom?â
âDownstairs,â he said. âIn the guest suite.â
I wasnât sure why theyâd put her there, but I started running. Along the hall, around the balustrade and down the spiral staircase to the main foyer.
When I ran for the guest suite, I threw open the door to the hallway that led down to those bedrooms, to find Kayla pacing the carpet, holding her huge belly.
âAre you okay?â I asked, gripping her face, turning her chin left and right. There wasnât a scratch on her, yet my heart pounded and my dragon screamed inside my head. âI would never have forgiven myself if youâd been hurt while I was gone. I am so sorry. I should never have left you.â
Kaylaâs eyes filled with tears. âWhere did you go?â
âTo Marienne,â I answered honestly.
She gulped audibly, the tears spilling down her cheeks. âDo you love her?â
âLove her?â I repeated, then groaned. âAunt Marienne is my sisterâs mother-in-law. Sheâs a sorceress. She helped me find you, and is happily married to King Erik, whoâs even tougher than my dad if you can believe it.â
Kayla sobbed and threw herself against me, crying hard.
I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight, despite the tragedy of my motherâs injury, my dragon began to purr with happiness having his mate close by.
âLetâs sit down.â I told her, pulling her to the leather couch pressed against the closest wall. âTell me what has you so upset.â
Kayla pulled back to wipe at her eyes. âIt was just so horrible. The accident. I was walking behind your mom, because Iâm so slow. She was chatting and laughing, then she just slipped. I... Iâve never seen anyone hurt like that before.â
I pressed her head to my chest and stroked her long, soft hair. âIt wasnât your fault.â
She pushed against my chest, her gaze turning to a glare. âOf course, it wasnât my fault. Did someone say I pushed her? I was standing behind her, but Iâd never...â
âOh, I didnât mean it like that.â I tried to reassure her. âNo-one said that, but you were just so upset.
