Chapter 10

ANSELM

After my illuminating conversation with the king and queen of the Black Mountains, I took to the sky once more. They were right, I had no choice but to fight for the woman who was the key to my future happiness.

When I landed on the rooftop of my parents’ castle, a servant rushed out with a cloak, closely followed by my father. His face was ashen.

“What’s happened?” I asked, pulling the cloak on and running for the door.

Please, please, let Kayla and the baby be okay.

“It’s your mother,” Dad said, swallowing hard. “She had an accident. Slipped on the stairs...”

“Oh God no.” I pulled the door shut behind us then started hurrying towards their bedroom.

“She isn’t there.” Dad stopped in the middle of the hallway. “The doctor. He said... She’s...”

He didn’t seem to be able to speak, and panic skittled through me. How bad was it?

I grabbed my father by the arms and shook him. “Dad. Concentrate. Where have they got Mom?”

“Downstairs,” he said. “In the guest suite.”

I wasn’t sure why they’d put her there, but I started running. Along the hall, around the balustrade and down the spiral staircase to the main foyer.

When I ran for the guest suite, I threw open the door to the hallway that led down to those bedrooms, to find Kayla pacing the carpet, holding her huge belly.

“Are you okay?” I asked, gripping her face, turning her chin left and right. There wasn’t a scratch on her, yet my heart pounded and my dragon screamed inside my head. “I would never have forgiven myself if you’d been hurt while I was gone. I am so sorry. I should never have left you.”

Kayla’s eyes filled with tears. “Where did you go?”

“To Marienne,” I answered honestly.

She gulped audibly, the tears spilling down her cheeks. “Do you love her?”

“Love her?” I repeated, then groaned. “Aunt Marienne is my sister’s mother-in-law. She’s a sorceress. She helped me find you, and is happily married to King Erik, who’s even tougher than my dad if you can believe it.”

Kayla sobbed and threw herself against me, crying hard.

I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight, despite the tragedy of my mother’s injury, my dragon began to purr with happiness having his mate close by.

“Let’s sit down.” I told her, pulling her to the leather couch pressed against the closest wall. “Tell me what has you so upset.”

Kayla pulled back to wipe at her eyes. “It was just so horrible. The accident. I was walking behind your mom, because I’m so slow. She was chatting and laughing, then she just slipped. I... I’ve never seen anyone hurt like that before.”

I pressed her head to my chest and stroked her long, soft hair. “It wasn’t your fault.”

She pushed against my chest, her gaze turning to a glare. “Of course, it wasn’t my fault. Did someone say I pushed her? I was standing behind her, but I’d never...”

“Oh, I didn’t mean it like that.” I tried to reassure her. “No-one said that, but you were just so upset.
